Manufacturing and Industry in the City of Newark

Industrial and manufacturing jobs are a significant part of the Newark economy, accounting for almost one-third of all jobs in the city. Bennett Midland prepared a detailed study of the manufacturing and industrial activity in Newark, delivering for policy makers a finely detailed picture of employment and establishments in these critical sectors, and framing the formation of economic development policy to support future growth.

Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Quarterly Workforce Indicators and Zip Code Business Patterns, Bennett Midland constructed an original dataset to provide a comprehensive representation of Newark’s manufacturing and industrial sectors. The construction of this dataset enabled a more granular analysis of the City’s economic activities than were previously possible.

Drawing on this model, our research team was able to assess how Newark's industries have shifted over the past five years, revealing areas of growth and decline. The study documents those industries, subsectors and locations that hold promise for future growth and provides a framework for crafting initiatives that will nurture a growing light industrial sector in Newark.
